November, 2001
This November edition of E-News is late and contains information which has been provided on at least one other occasion.     However, November was a month for Viruses and we must continue to reinforce the message about protection from these insidious attacks on our valuable time and data.

We know that most Members are finding the information overflow a real headache so we will endeavour to keep these Newsletters to a minimum while still providing you with extremely important information.

Viruses
If you have not been affected by the current spate of viruses, then CONGRATULATIONS!  You have heeded the many warnings and taken appropriate preventative action.

Although not a 100% prevention, good virus detection software is a must in any business - especially in the tourism industry.   The most important advice we can offer is to keep your Visus Detector up-to-date.  This should be done at least weekly.  Most of the latest programs will display a prompt if you haven't done an update within a week.  If you do not have a system that does this, then we recommend you get one.

We also recommend that, in addition to your weekly updates, you also run a full scan of your hard disk as often as you can make the time.  The reason for this is that some virus detection software may only scan for new incoming viruses.  So, if a new one has managed to find its way into your computer (between updates), the only way to detect it will be via the scan.

If your computer has been infected by a virus, the only thing to do is seek help from a qualified technical person.  Once the virus is cleaned up and your new Virus Detector has been loaded, please keep the updates and scans at the top of your TO DO list.

Here are 3 of the more common Virus Detectors with their web addresses:

Norman Data Defense Systems www.norman.com
Nortons Anti Virus www.symantec.com.au
McAfee ViruScan www.mcafee.com

Adobe Acrobat:
QRAMA and many other Government and private organisations are now providing documents in PDF (Adobe Portable Document Format).  Adobe provides FREE software - Acrobat Reader, which enables you to read any PDF file.  If you haven't already done so, please go to this address and download the software as soon as possible.

If you have downloaded Acrobat Reader, please remember to visit the Adobe Downloads page regularly to check for new versions.  You should be using at least version 5.0.

September's E-News provided details about the benefits (and otherwise of PDF) documents, especially in relation to Forms.  If you haven't already read this report, we recommend you do.
